Lausanne 30 km Genève 80 km Blonay 6 km A9 10 km Blonay 6 km Mountain Forest Bicycle touring Excursion Downhill skiing Ski touring Climbing Public swimming pool 6 kmChâteau de Chillon (12 km) A sombre fortress in a beautiful lakeside setting, the Château de Chillon caught the imagination of Lord Byron, and consequently that of a horde of tourists down the ages. Byron's poem The Prisoner of Chillon was inspired by the plight of a 16th-century Reformation preacher, François de Bonivard, whose views so infuriated the Duke of Savoy that he had him chained to a pillar in the dungeon for four years. The chateau is Switzerland's most visited building.Lausanne (30 km) The wealthy capital of the Vaud region, Lausanne enjoys a wonderful site high on a hillside above Lake Geneva, looking over to the majestic Savoy Alps. The charming old town features the Cathèdrale de Notre Dame, one of Switzerland's finest Gothic cathedrals. Down at the Quai d'Ouchy, old-fashioned steamships set out for romantic lake cruises while a walk through the Mediterranean-style gardens reveals the magnificent, new Olympic Museum. The town boasts many other fine museums, none more curious or compelling than the Collection de l'Art Brut, featuring the dynamic work of untrained, often mentally ill artists.Geneva (80 km) With its history of acting as international referee, it is not surprising that Geneva (Genève) is Switzerland's most cosmopolitan city (a third of its inhabitants are foreigners). North of the River Rhône is the international zone where the United Nations European Headquarters (Palais des Nations), and many other august organisations are located. A visit to the acclaimed International Red Cross Museum can be a harrowing experience. South of the river is the flower-lined lakeside promenade, featuring the world-famous Jet d'Eau fountain, which shoots water more than 140 metres (460 feet) into the air. Alongside is the old town and the Cathédrale de St Pierre, which was the scene of much of Calvin's work in the Swiss Reformation. He and fellow reformers are honoured by the massive Reformation Monument in the leafy Bastion Park. In and around the old town are many fine museums including the Maison Tavel (city history), the Petit Palais (modern art) and the Museum of Art and History.
