Recreational Activities

Stonewall Country has outstanding number of heritage tourism attractions; such as Monticello(www.monticello.org) home of Thomas Jefferson, Ashlawn- Highland(www.monticello.avenue.org/ashlawn) home of James Monroe, Montpelier(www.montpelier.org) home of James Madison and Woodrow Wilson's birthplace(www.woodrowwilson.org) in Staunton. There are many battlefield parks (www.2cr.nps.gov/abpp/shenandoah/svso-1.html) and other civil war sites such as Belle Grove plantation(www.bellegrove.org), Belle Boyd's cottage, Lee chapel at Washington and Lee University, (www.leechapel.wlu.edu/history.html), New Market's Hall of Valor(www.vmi.edu/museum/nm/nmbshp1.html) and The Stonewall Jackson Museum located at Hupp's Hill battlefield(www.waysideofva.com/stonewalljackson). If civil war is not your interest, how about visiting our thriving wineries(www.vdacs.state.va.us/wine/wineries.html) like Afton Mountain Vineyards, Barboursville Vineyards(www.barboursvillewine.com), Shenandoah Vineyards(www.shentel.net/shenvine) art galleries like P. Buckley Moss(www.p-Buckley- moss.com) or enjoy a music festival like the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival(www.musicfest.org).Virginia has mountains in the west and the ocean in the east. Best of both worlds I would say. Your visit here would be incomplete without visiting the Blue Ridge parkway(www.nps.gov/blri/home/htm) or the Skyline drive(www.gorp.com/gorp/resource/us_national_park/va/drv_she.htm) rated one of the 10 most beautiful drives in the world. Our chef can pack a picnic lunch for your pleasure. Hike part of the Appalachian trail(www.patc.net/store/at/htm) or in one of our many State Parks(165.83.219.77/parksearch/state/state.cfm?statevar=va). Don't want to do the driving but want to see beautiful scenery? Try the Cass (www.neumedia.net/~cassrr) or Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroads (www.wvweb.com/www/potomac_eagle/) in nearby mountains in West Virginia. A perfect day trip!! Any fisherman in the crowd? We have excellent trout fishing (www.blueridgeanglers.com). Ask Chef Robin about fly fishing and you might not have time to do any fishing! Tired yet?? Travel to Lexington to the Virginia Horse Center(www.horsecenter.org) with breathtaking views and pristine grounds. See one of the seven wonders of the world, Natural Bridge(www.naturalbridgeva.com). Take a hot air balloon ride with Shenandoah Balloon Adventures(www.shenandoahadventures.com) or Blue Ridge Hot Air Balloons(www.rideair.com). To make the Chatelaine happy, visit the Stonewall Jackson house(www.stonewalljackson.org) and Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery where Stonewall is buried( minus his arm.) Stonewall taught at Virginia Military Institute(www.vmi.org) for twelve years.During the summer, think about rafting, canoeing, kayaking, and tubing. Front Royal Canoe Company(www.frontroyalcanoe.com/free1.htm) and West Virginia Whitewater(www.wvwhitewater.com/sheandoah_river.htm). Or tour our Caverns such as Crystal Caverns(www.waysideofva.com/crystalcaverns), Shenandoah Caverns(www.shenandoah.org/caverns/index.html), Luray Caverns(www.luraycaverns.com), Skyline Caverns(www.skylinecaverns.com) or Endless Caverns(www.endlesscavern.com) but the winter season is for skiing, snowboarding and tubing. Massanutten Resort(www.massresort.com) is the closest but try Bryce (wwwbryceresort.com), Wintergreen(www.wintergreen-resort.com) or Snowshoe Mountain resorts.(www.showshoemtn.net/winter)Don't want to travel that far?? How about a walking tour of Harrisonburg, Virginia Quilt Museum(wwww.folkart.com/~latitude/museums/m_vqm.htm), Dayton's farmers market, Shenandoah Valley Heritage Museum(www.heritagecenter.com) Green Valley bookfair(www.gvbookfair.com) or the Frontier Culture Museum(frontiermusseum.org).As you can see, we have many enticements to bring you to visit us. But if you are looking for a relaxing, quiet, romantic get-a-way, we can accommodate you as well with our southern hospitality!
