Skamokawa is a small village (pop. 200) on State Route 4, sheltered from the Columbia River by Brooks Slough and Skamokawa Creek. A river-based community, it is an excellent base for local kayaking and canoeing. Local waters accommodate skill levels from beginning to advanced and instruction is available from experienced instructors at Columbia River Kayaking and at the Skamokawa Center.
Miles of bicycling are available on quiet flat roads in the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for the Columbia White Tail Deer. River views are breath-taking as container ships pass so closely you can sometimes hear conversations aboard. In season buckets of blackberries can be had for the picking.
Local history, books, crafts and conversation are featured at the River Life Interpretive Center at Redmen Hall, part of the Skamokawa Historic District. Local authors frequently hold book signings there. Chautauqua-style lectures are sponsored by the Friends of Skamokawa. Other displays include historic photos and artifacts relating to the areas history.
Skamokawa plays host to a variety of events throughout the year, from a classic car show in the spring, disc golf tourney, salmon derby, hobie cat regatta, a delightful county fair and season-oriented events such as the Christmas open house and craft fair at Redmen Hall.
