The Little Sugar River Farm is a beautiful vacation rental on a small, mostly organic farm 2.5 hours north of Chicago. Located along the Sugar River bike trail, the house is surrounded by 1900 acres of wildlife preserve. Hiking, biking, eating home-grown vegetables and berries, picking flowers from the gardens, sitting on the back porch watching the cranes, and listening to the owls and whip-poor-wills are some of the best ways to spend one's time here. Winter stays offer the possibility of ice skating on the little pond, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or simply relaxing by the wood stove with a good book. Guests are welcome to help themselves to the bounty of the fields and greenhouses during their stay, and are free to take flowers and organic produce home with them. The house, which received an Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects (WI Chapter), is elegant yet simple. Interior flooring, cabinets, and furniture were custom designed for their specific location and built of cherry and oak harvested from the woodlot. Within the main room of the house, three walls of windows flood the interior with light. A massive sofa, cherry dining table, and wood stove anchor the living space. French doors open to a large back porch, which looks out over fields, prairie, woodlot, wildlife preserve, and moraines. The farm is a quiet place in the rural midwest for people who enjoy natural beauty, outdoor activities, and orgahic fruits and vegetables straight from the garden. We strive to make the farm a refuge from the chaos and coarseness of modern life -- a place of peace and privacy, calm and order. This is a place where one can feel closer to nature's beauty--to dramatic thunderstorms, dragonflies perched on sunlit walls, the muffled silence of a snowstorm, the sweet tang of a tomato picked warm from the garden, the chorus of spring peepers on an April evening.
